J F Batteson died from wounds on 12th September, 1914, after having been sent to a base hospital in the west of France but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The 2nd Highland Light Infantry battalion was part of 5 Brigade, 2nd Division, that had been in France since the beginning of the war and after the opening battles at Mons and Le Cateau had. along with the rest of the BEF, retreated to the River Marne.
